I play a lot of racing games, but I rarely come across a web game that makes me stop and read more about it. Grand Extreme Racing is one of those rare cases. You jump in with no installation, yet the driving feels more serious than I expected.

I recommend memorizing the reset key first. Thanks to it, every time my car got stuck or flipped, I lost only a few seconds.
First, the grip. The cars don’t float around like in many web games, so you really have to plan your way into corners. Second, the AI opponents. According to Drifted’s review, the AI isn’t afraid to race dirty, and I can confirm it, since I got squeezed out at a tight corner more than once. Third, the graphics. When I went into Settings and raised the quality to High, the visuals looked noticeably better.
The prize money after each race is also pretty friendly, so upgrading your car doesn’t turn into a grind.
The game splits the screen for two players on the same computer. There’s currently no online mode for playing with strangers. I think that’s fine, because with a friend sitting beside you, every win and loss comes with someone to talk about it.
No, it runs right in your browser.
No, it only supports one player or two players on the same computer.
Yes, you upgrade it with the prize money from races.
When I need something lighter, I switch to Blocky Rider. From the descriptions I found, it’s an endless traffic racing game on a blocky road. You collect coins to unlock new cars, use power-ups, and compare scores with friends on a leaderboard. Each round is very short, which suits a break in your day, while Grand Extreme Racing suits longer sittings.
